Complementary planar terahertz metamaterials.
Planar electric split ring resonator (eSRR) metamaterials and their corresponding inverse structures are designed and characterized computationally and experimentally utilizing finite element modeling and THz time domain spectroscopy. A complementary response is observed in transmission. Specifically, for the eSRRs a decrease in transmission is observed at resonance whereas the inverse structur...
متن کاملAsymmetric planar terahertz metamaterials.
We report an experimental observation of three distinct resonances in split ring resonators (SRRs) for both vertical and horizontal electric field polarizations at normal incidence by use of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Breaking the symmetry in SRRs by gradually displacing the capacitive gap from the centre towards the corner of the ring allows for an 85% modulation of the fundamental in...

متن کاملHighly tunable optical activity in planar achiral terahertz metamaterials.
Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we demonstrate tunable polarization rotation and circular dichroism in intrinsically non-chiral planar terahertz metamaterials without twofold rotational symmetry. The observed effect is due to extrinsic chirality arising from the mutual orientation of the metamaterial plane and the propagation direction of the incident terahertz wave.
متن کاملPlanar wallpaper group metamaterials for novel terahertz applications.
We present novel metamaterial structures based upon various planar wallpaper groups, in both hexagonal and square unit cells. An investigation of metamaterials consisting of one, two, and three unique sub-lattices with resonant frequencies in the terahertz (THz) was performed. We describe the theory, perform simulations, and conduct experiments to characterize these multiple element metamateria...
